The mission of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America is to “enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” The vision statement of the Boys and Girls Club of Maury County is: “We strive each day to POSITIVELY IMPACT Youth, STRENGTHEN Families, and ENRICH Maury County, one child at a time.
The Boys and Girls Club of Maury County has been in existence since 1999 when it was officially chartered by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). BGCA is one of the largest youth services organizations in the country with over 150 years of experience providing young people with a safe, positive place to learn and grow; life-enhancing programs and character development experiences; ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals; and hope and opportunity. There are currently 4,000 Clubs serving 4 million kids annually nationwide.
The Club serves on average 150 youth ages 5-18 per day, with a total enrollment (including summer and fall/spring breaks) of over 300 youth. We serve primarily at-risk minority youth from some of the highest crime, low-income areas of Columbia. Seventy-four percent of our Club members come from single parent households, and 80% reside in households whose annual income is less than $30,000 per year. For 59% of our families, the head of household was unemployed at the time of the child’s enrollment in the Club. Seventy-one percent of our youth qualify for the free and reduced school lunch program. Seventy-two percent of Club members are African American, 8% are Biracial, 6% are Hispanic and 14% are Caucasian. Fifty-three percent are in elementary school, 34% are in middle school, and 13% are in high school.
Our mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
